Variety of events in Macao to mark 77th National Day
MACAU, September 29 - The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government will host on Thursday (1 October) a series of activities, including a flag-raising ceremony, a reception, a fun run and fireworks displays, to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
At 8am on National Day, 1 October, the flag-raising ceremony will be held at Golden Lotus Square. It will be presided over by the Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai.
Representatives from, respectively the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR; the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the MSAR; and the Macao Garrison of the People’s Liberation Army; as well as leaders from the Legislative Assembly and of the judiciary; principal officials; and people from across the community will attend the ceremony. Some members of the Macao youth honour guard who recently participated in the “Salute to the National Flag” event in Beijing have also been invited to attend.
The flag-raising ceremony will be broadcast live on television channels of Teledifusão de Macau (TDM).
At 9.30am, the MSAR Government will host a large-scale reception at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex, sharing with all sectors of society the joy of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Several MSAR Government departments will hold celebratory events on National Day. The Sports Bureau will on Thursday hold the 2026 National Day and World Walking Day Fun Run, which will start shortly after the flag-raising ceremony at Lotus Square.
The Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau will have a temporary counter at its Senado Square headquarters from 9am to 2pm, offering a commemorative postmarking service for the occasion. Commemorative envelopes for the anniversary will also be available for purchase, at 5 patacas each.
In addition, the Macau Grand Prix Museum, Macao Museum, and the exhibition centre of the Macao Science Center will be open to the public free of charge on 1 October. The Communications Museum and the “Love the Country, Love Macao Educational Base for the Youth” will remain open on National Day.
The Macao Government Tourism Office’s “34th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest” will include Macao’s night sky being lit up on the evenings of 1 and 4 October. Fireworks displays will be presented by companies from China and Thailand on 1 October, followed by performances by entities from the Philippines and the United Kingdom on 4 October. On the respective days, the shows will begin at 9pm and 9.40pm, with each one lasting approximately 18 minutes. The signature supporting event of the fireworks contest – the Fireworks Carnival – will be held at the Macao Science Center waterfront promenade from 5.30pm to 10.30pm on 1 and 4 October respectively.
In addition, from 1 to 6 October, from noon to 7pm, temporary pedestrian zones will be established around Rua dos Ervanários, on Macao peninsula, and at Taipa village, creating a festive community atmosphere and enhancing the public’s experience of the festivities.
