The From Many Peoples, Strength Act Comes into Force

The Heritage Recognition (From Many Peoples, Strength) Act has come into force, creating a new framework for recognizing the heritage months of Saskatchewan's many peoples.

"Our heritage is an important part of who we are as Saskatchewan people," Parks, Culture, and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. "Bringing heritage months together under a common framework reminds us of what we all have in common: we are Saskatchewan people."

The Ministry of Park, Culture, and Sport has engaged with representatives of two dozen cultural and faith groups that have expressed interest in participating in the framework.

Engagement has concluded with several communities, including for Japanese Heritage Month and Ukrainian Heritage Month, which were formally added to the new framework for September. German Heritage Month, Islamic Heritage Month, Korean Heritage Month, and Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month are also anticipated to be added in October.

Engagement is ongoing with representatives of Saskatchewan's Christian, Hindu, Jewish, African Canadian, Chinese, Doukhobor, Filipino, First Nations, Francophone, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Persian, Polish, Mennonite, Métis, and Sri Lankan communities.

In contrast to the existing framework, which requires representatives of cultural and faith groups to submit a proclamation request each year, the new framework codifies heritage recognition months so that they are automatically proclaimed each year.

While many provinces have passed legislation for one or more heritage recognition months, Saskatchewan is the first to create a unified framework under which all stand together.
